Why Jangpura?

Jangpura's Bhogal lane in South Delhi has been a carpet hub for decades. It's where wholesalers, retailers, and even export houses operate side by side. If you're buying a carpet in Delhi, this is who's serious buyers go — not malls, not online.

I spent two full days visiting 12 shops, comparing prices, materials, and sales pitches. Here's what I learned.

What I explored

The real deal. These are mostly sourced from Kashmir, Bhadohi, and Mirzapur. Knot density ranges from 100 to 900+ knots per square inch. Higher knot count = finer detail and higher price. Most shops let you feel the difference.

Machine-made carpets

Available in polypropylene and polyester. Look similar from a distance but feel different underfoot. Significantly cheaper and suitable for high-traffic areas where you don't want to invest in handmade.

Silk carpets

Found in only 3 of the 12 shops. Mostly Kashmiri silk with intricate floral patterns. Prices start at ₹35,000 for a 3×5 ft piece. Beautiful, but impractical for daily use.

Dhurries and flatweaves

Cotton and jute dhurries are the most affordable option. Great for layering, casual rooms, and renters. Prices range from ₹1,500 to ₹6,000 for a 5×7 ft piece.

Quality differences I noticed

Knot density matters more than size. A smaller hand-knotted carpet with 300 KPSI will outlast a larger one with 100 KPSI. Most shops don't volunteer this info — you have to ask.

Colour fastness varies wildly. I rubbed a damp white cloth on carpets in 5 shops. Two showed visible colour transfer. Always test before buying.

Backing quality. Flip the carpet. Hand-knotted carpets show the pattern on the back. Machine-made ones have a uniform mesh backing. This is the easiest authenticity check.

What to avoid

1. Shops that don't let you check the back. If they resist flipping the carpet, walk away.
2. "Pure silk" claims without certification. Ask for a burn test or certificate of origin. Synthetic silk melts; real silk smells like burnt hair.
3. Heavily discounted prices. If a "₹50,000 carpet" is offered at ₹12,000 with 5 minutes of negotiation, the original price was never real.
4. Buying without comparing. Visit at least 4–5 shops before deciding. Prices for the same quality can vary by 30–40%.
